The United Kingdom has revealed that its armed forces tracked and monitored three Russian submarines during what officials described as a month-long covert operation in the North Atlantic region near vital undersea infrastructure.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the operation involved coordinated action by the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force to detect and follow the submarines, which were suspected of gathering intelligence around undersea communication cables and energy pipelines.
The Defence Secretary confirmed that the submarines included one nuclear-powered attack submarine and two specialist deep-sea vessels linked to Russia’s advanced underwater operations unit. The activity raised concerns in the UK government due to the strategic importance of underwater infrastructure, which carries global internet traffic, financial data, and energy supplies.
Officials stated that the British military used surveillance aircraft, sonar systems, and naval patrols to continuously track the vessels.
